Web design history

"Developing Web sites is a passion"

My connection to the Internet happened about 15 years ago, with a Mac plus and a 2,400kbs modem.
Back then most things where text based and so there wasn’t a problem surfing the net with a 2400 buad modem. Eventually along came the gifs and the jpegs, followed by the music, mp3’s and video's... So we had to bump up the power, faster Computers and more Bandwidth.guy_glasses

My Web development work started in 1995

I found a few sites that where teaching HTML and using the knowledge I gained from the lessons they taught, I put up web pages on Tripod & CompuServe (Free web hosting Companies back in the day...not sure if they still exist) The ISP (Internet Service Providers) offered a small amount of space for individuals to put up home pages, which I took advantage of also.

My first Job was for a company called CRS, based in Salisbury NC, they where a vending company who wanted me to design a company web site.

Over the years I have worked closely with many individuals and small businesses in the Rowan county area repairing, servicing and upgrading computers and also developing there web sites.

Rowan business forms, Medexpress, GX fitness, LVI services, Fine Frame Gallery, Benchwarmers, Madison Avenue South, Rowan Wildlife Association, The Next Step, Las Palmas, Combined Retail Services, Rowan Arts Council, Piedmont HealthCare are a few of the companies I have worked with over the years.

Web Design

One way to design or develop a Web site or Intranet.

Now that we have Web 2.0 a whole new way of developing a web site has been opened to the modern day Web developer.

With out going into a lot of technical mumbo jumbo, I will give you a brief explanation on web site design.
  • Modern day, or 2.0 web sites need to have a good deal of content.
  • That content has to be dynamic, updated regularly.
  • The updated Content is the reason the client returns to your web site on a regular basis to see what you have to offer.

LAMP Enviroment

The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of software, usually free and open source software, used to run dynamic Web sites or servers. The original expansion is as follows:

The combination of these technologies is used primarily to define a web server infrastructure, define a programming paradigm of developing software, and establish a software distribution package.

Though the originators of these open source programs did not design them all to work specifically with each other, the combination has become popular because of its low acquisition cost and because of the ubiquity of its components (which come bundled with most current Linux distributions). When used in combination they represent a solution stack of technologies that supports application servers.

Good positioning in Google and other search engines. (SEO).

Designing Web sites nowadays is a complicated operation.. You have got to be able to get your head around a lot of different design techniques and be well rounded in the business of the WWW.SEO Google Page Ranking

  • Separation of content and design.
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
  • XML, PHP, JAVA programing languages.
  • Database knowledge, MYSQL
  • Video and Graphic applications.
  • Photoshop, FCP
  • Compression techniques.
  • Marketing.
  • Ad-words

A lot of today's web sites are applications, and what a large number of companies are useing for there web sites and intranets, are called CMS (content management systems). There are a few different types available, with the 2 mentioned below from the Open source community which completely fits in with LAMP environment and framework.
  • Drupal.
  • Joomla.
I use Joomla a very robust application that allows a client to have a very rich and powerful Web site, that can be upgraded regularly. The client can have custom built applications that run throughout there system and because of the separation of content and design the client can keep all the content intact while changing the aesthetics of the web site,

This only scratches the surface of what is involved when developing a functional web site. Just to give you an idea!

Joomla!

provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface that simplifies the management and publishing of large volumes of content including HTML, documents, and rich media. Joomla! is used by organizations of all sizes for Public Web sites, Intranets, and Extranets and is supported by a community of thousands of users.
